Going Places: Photography by Margaret Waage

“The real voyage of discovery”, as French novelist Marcel Proust said, “consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” For the past 10 years, Southington photojournalist Margaret Waage has been looking at familiar sites in Connecticut with new eyes. This fall, a collection of Waage’s stunning photographs of portions of the state many natives have never seen will be on view at the Golden Age of Trucking Museum in Middlebury, Connecticut.

The Golden Age of Trucking Museum will present “Going Places: Photography by Margaret Waage” November 15, 2008 through November 2009. The year-long exhibit will feature dramatic vistas from the humble to the spectacular seen through Waage’s perceptive eye. An  opening reception will be held Saturday, November 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Founders Gallery, inside the Museum.

These photographs, in sizes ranging from 8x10 to 16x20 explore the state in all its moods and seasons – from the brittle winter frost through spring’s wet promise, to the resplendent clarity of summer, to the poetry of autumn. The photographs emerged from a series of “destination” articles Waage wrote and photographed for the Republican-American newspaper in Waterbury, Connecticut. “Daytrips” are a popular pastime for Connecticut residents eager to explore the state’s varied topography and diverse cultural and heritage sites.

Waage has always distinguished her portrayal of the sites with her own keen eye of the modest beauty in uncovered corners. What she sees is the texture of the rusting bicycle against the clapboard farmhouse, or the sheltered symmetry of delphinium in full bloom. “Going Places” is particularly suited to the museum, which celebrates not only the  vehicles for transportation but transportation itself.

About her work, Waage says, “Visual story telling informs us not only about the world around us but the world within  us. None of us see the same image in the same way, which is why photography is the intimate experience of the communal landscape.”
